Cancer early detection and prevention

An apple a day is just the beginning. When it comes to cancer, prevention and early detection are the keys to lowering risk and increasing your chances for successful recovery.

Prevention takes many forms. If you smoke, know this: Cigarette smoking is the number one preventable cause of cancer, and kicking the habit is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Another effective way to reduce risk is with chemoprevention, which is commonly used for women with an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Early detection—catching cancer in its earliest stages—can dramatically increase the rate of cure for many types of cancer. Regular screening is the best way to detect early forms of cancer and stay on top of your health. For example, it’s been shown that mammograms can reduce the risk of mortality from breast cancer by approximately 30%.
